It’s New York Fashion Week!

Well, technically NYFW doesn’t start until Thursday, but over the last few seasons I’ve had more and more shows beginning on Wednesday! So I will be sorta off the grid for about a week, but you can follow my fashion week updates on Twitter or Instagram (thelizblack). I will be conducting a lot of interviews, posting runway shots, party photos and more!

Here are a few examples of highlights from previous seasons.

Interviewing Carolina Herrera. (She told me she loved my hair & then invited me to her show!)

Watching Cyndi Lauper sing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” at the Betsey Johnson retrospective/birthday party.

Watching Betsey & Cyndi take a bow after the retrospective. (And what we thought at the time was Betsey’s last show.)

Having fun at the Charlotte Ronson party last season.

Chilling with my blogger girls, Margie & Gabi!

Interviewing Johnny Weir after he skated during a show.

(And oh, so much more! So tune in here, instagram or twitter to see what’s happening during Fashion Week!)

NEW POST: What’s Black & White & Red Allover….

(Answer: it’s me! Like you didn’t see that one coming…)

Anyway, I was lucky enough to get invited to the Isabel Marant for H&M launch event. Having been to the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target party I knew to expect a bit of a shit-show, but it was beyond insane. We got there 30 minutes early and the line was already wrapped around the corner. By the time they opened the doors the line was down to the next avenue. When we got inside it was clear that every one was 20 seconds away from getting into a fist fight.

Now, I’m a seasoned shopper. I hit the mall every year on Black Friday, I can navigate a sample sale with ease, and I can even sift through the garbage at F21 to find a gem, but this brouhaha was more than I could take.

But, instead of leaving, I went up to the men’s section to scope out their stuff (men’s sizing is bigger, so would fit my plus frame better anyway).  Not only was this a brilliant move (I was able to snatch up a coveted sweatshirt and top), I then headed up to the 3rd floor to try on a few items, which just happened to also be where they were bringing out the replenishment stock.

I could have been greedy, I could have snatched up items and re-sold them later. But I think that’s unfair (and I’m too lazy to deal with that mess).

The coatigan is actually a size M and it’s huge, and the men’s items were a size L and oversized. It’s yet another lesson why trying things on is so important!

This outfit would also make for a perfect Paris Fashion Week look; considering that Isabel Marant hails from France it seems only right to bring her designs “home.” And why am I randomly mentioning PFW? Well, the nice people at 39nineteen are offering a chance to attend! After years of NYFW, it would be fab to finally check off “attend a foreign fashion week” on my bucket list, and hopefully you all can help make it happen! Just vote for me on their facebook page so I can win! (And, if I don’t win, hopefully I can snag some gorgeous Diamondere jewels as a consolation prize!)

Top 10 Outfits of 2013

NEW POST: It’s The Final Countdown!

Oh 2013… you were fabulous and awful, all at once. (But what year isn’t, amiright?) But instead of focusing on the negs, I’m gonna zero in on all the wonderful things of 2013.

I covered NYFW for the (now defunct) I Like What You’re Wearing and got paid for it. Examples herehere and here

I began my Refinery29 contribution in 2012, and was asked to contribute twice a week (and got a pay bump), which to me is a great sign of an increase of interest in plus-size fashion.

I moved back to downtown Jersey City (finally!) and found a fab brownstone apartment mere blocks from the PATH station.

I started a new job in NYC at a major company where I actually get to put my writing skills to use. (And now I’m closer to friends and getting NYFW shows will be even easier in 2014).

So, besides all those things, there were outfits, and some of them you really seemed to like. But this post is about me, and the things I like, so… in no particular order, here are my top 10 favorite looks of 2013!

(Sorry for the immense post delay! I have been beyond swamped since NYFW… I started a new day job this week, we are moving to Jersey City at the end of Oct and sadly, I’ve been dealing with some intense family health issues. But anyway, on to the fashion!)

NEW POST: Cabiria at NYFW (plus me, lookin’ all fancy-schmancy)

This was QUITE the busy fashion week for me! I accumulated around 70 invites (obviously I didn’t make them all), but I made as many as humanly possible! Some of my favorites this season were Charlotte Ronson, Zimmermann, Koonhor, Candela, KYE, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Ostwald Helgason (who will have a collection with ALDO coming soon!), Tadashi Shoji, Tia Cibani, Ann Yee, and of course, Cabiria, the FIRST EVER plus collection to show at the tents at NYFW!

Cabiria had an AMAZING response, and I barely was able to squeeze in my interview for Refinery29 because SO many people were clamoring to speak to the designer, Eden Miller. You can read my article and interview here.

For this outfit (and don’t worry, there are more NYFW outfit posts on the way!) I knew I wanted to pair this high-waist wet look skirt and crop top together, but the bag was a purchase from the night before at the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target launch party, so that was a last-minute outfit addition. I actually had my photo taken by a few different blogs and websites that day, so I guess the look was a hit!

After the Cabiria show I had a little time to kill, so I went up to the Tresemme booth, and the amazingly talented hairstylist Katie Neutz created this amazing Veronica Lake-esq style. People gushed about my hair the entire day… I SO wish I had the skillz to replicate it!

NEW POST: Urban Cat Woman

I’m a German mad scientist-umpire, and I’m calling you out.

I’m a welder that’s only concerned with my eyes, not with charring my hair.

I’m a fashion blogger at a funeral who decided leggings were pants.

I’m an urban cat woman, and this is my day off outfit.

Whatever Choose-Your-Own-Adventure story you want to back up this ensemble, pick it.

(But, if I ever get into a street rumble I think this would be a good look to resurrect. Slinky in H2T black, my hair looks even redder than normal against such a dark pallet.)

Hat: Target

Sunglasses: Street Vendor

Vest: H&M

Necklace: LOFT

Shirt: ASOS

Shoes: Steve Madden

NEW POST: Errand Runner

Errands. Love ‘em, hate ‘em, whatever, this ish has got to get done. And until I win the Powerball, I’m stuck doing my own errands. And when running around THE CITY in the summer it’s best to air on the fashionable comfort; flat shoes or sandals, breezy tops or dresses, loose cotton pants and chic sunglasses. So, do the fashion math, and it only made sense that I decided to wear my high-waist ASOS peg pants, Forever21 cropped tank top, Lane Bryant spiked sandals and Forever21 sunnies. (And of course, my almost ubiquitous neon MICHAEL Michael Kors crossbody.)

So, off I went into the great blue yonder  to NYC, for a few fashion-ish errands. After a veggie lunch at Qi, we trotted off the the Paper Super Duper Market for an Imperial Woodpecker Sno-ball (birthday cake, ugh, yum!) and to check out the general scene.

Then we jetted subwayed/cabbed our way to the Javits Center to stop by Intermezzo & ENK (thanks for the invite Seventh House PR). We wandered around from stall to stall, gawking at the dazzling dresses, stunning shoes, brilliant baubles and so much more.

Top: Forever21 (Size L)

Pants: ASOS (Size 14)

Bag: MICHAEL Michael Kors

Sandals: Lane Bryant

Sunglasses: Forever21

You ever find something so amazing that you can’t wait to tell everyone about it? Well, the Elomi swim line is one of those things!

Made specifically for full figured women, Elomi understands the curves of a woman’s body and crafts their swimsuits and lingerie to compliment your shape, not fight it.

While I was already a big fan of Elomi’s products, I was thrilled to see they had expanded into swim. And they didn’t just dip a toe, they jumped right in, with an amazing three-piece swim system, and most importantly, the swim bra.

The swim bra fits (and is sized) just like a regular bra. It’s an amazing foundation for any swim look, allowing you to wear it as a bikini top or layer it under a tankini, one-piece or similar swim top.

Most swimsuits (straight & plus-sized) don’t offer enough support, and the larger your breasts are, the more support you need in your swimwear. Now you have a promise of the lift and comfort you need, in a versatile layer-able style.

The line comes with three different colored swim bras, a new strapless swim bra (!), three different styled bottoms (high-waist, mid-waist and skirted), and a few different patterned & styled tankinis. So, depending on your personal style & how much coverage you desire, you can create your perfect swimsuit!

I just don’t recommend swimming with a pony hair belt on.

Check out more plus-size swim options from BarePlus!
