I wear a 14/16/18, depending on the brand. The American Apparel skirt is an XL and their clothes are very stretchy, and I think you would probably be fine w/ an XL in the brand as well. Is there no brick-and-mortar American Apparel stores by you? I certainly understand your hesitation on ordering online- it’s always tough to know how things fit when you’re thicker and on the top of the size curve. Happy shopping!
